6. Once outside, call the National Gas Emergency line on 0800 111 999. This is a free 24/7 number. They'll dispatch the National Grid (or relevant gas distribution network) to attend, locate the leak, and make the property safe — usually by capping the supply pending repair.
7. Once the National Grid has made the property safe, the supply will be off until the leak is properly located and repaired by a Gas Safe registered engineer. That's where David comes in.
Once the National Grid has attended a confirmed gas leak and capped the supply, the next step is locating and repairing the leak. That's regulated gas work and may only legally be carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here's how David works through the process.
Step 1: Tightness test of the existing installation. A calibrated tightness-test pump is connected to the meter and the gas line is pressurised to a known reading. The rate of pressure drop tells David how much gas is being lost and roughly the severity of the leak. This baseline reading is recorded.
Step 2: Section isolation. The gas line is divided into sections using existing isolators (appliance valves, branch isolators) so each section can be pressure-tested individually. By isolating sections one at a time and re-testing, David narrows down which run of pipework or which appliance has the leak.
Step 3: Electronic detection. A calibrated handheld electronic gas detector is run along the suspect section, paying particular attention to joints, threaded connections, soldered points, and any pipework that's been disturbed during recent work. The detector reads in parts-per-million and beeps faster as concentration rises — a steady high reading at a specific point indicates the leak source.
Step 4: Visual confirmation and access. Once the leak is located, David confirms the source visually where possible (often a corroded joint, a perished compression olive, a damaged copper run, or an appliance internal valve). If the leak is in a hidden location (under a floor, in a wall void, behind a built-in appliance) the appropriate access is opened up — minimally where possible.
Step 5: Repair. Depending on the source, the repair might be replacing a length of copper pipe, remaking a compression joint with a fresh olive, replacing a corroded section, or repairing/replacing an appliance internal valve.
